Estate Jewelry
In
the top picture on your right are several of our estate jewelry pieces
representing several important time periods. By describing each piece
we hope to briefly explain design, stone cutting, setting and history
of each period. The bottom picture shows our newest collectable estate
jewelry for sale. With our knowledge and background we can locate the
item of your desire either by networking among estate dealers or among
private collectors. Our showroom in San Francisco has a wide range of
estate pieces on display. (By appointment only)
Victorian (1837-1901) An era of optimism and prosperity prevailed during
Queen Victoria's reign. Jewelry produced during this time period in England,
Europe and the United States showed realistic detail of flowers, animals,
insects and reptiles with ornate granulation and filigree gold work. The
pendant is of 20 carat yellow gold set with a precious topaz . There is
a matching ring and earrings as well. The delicate gold necklace features
tiny natural seed pearls and aquamarines.
Edwardian
(1901-1914) Ornate symmetrical pieces of jewelry with fine gold work and
increasing use of diamonds (old mine and rose cuts) as well as rubies and
sapphires. Greater use of platinum either by itself or in combination with
yellow gold. The two crescent shape diamond pins are representative of this
era.
Art Deco (1920-1935) An era of growing wealth in the U.S. produced streamline
fashions and geometric finely made platinum jewelry with exacting detail
and a penchant for combining the highest quality colored stones with diamonds.
The Van Cleef & Arpels watch with natural pearls (circa 1925) and
the bracelet (circa 1930) with "Sugarloaf" Burma sapphires are
lovely examples of this time period.
Retro (1935-1945) Both pre and post World War II jewelry turns away from
the geometric towards the larger asymmetrical curved and sinuous look.
Highly polished surfaces of pink gold were often used in combination with
other colors of gold along with fine rubies (both platinum and the alloy
to make yellow gold were restricted during the war years). The two double
clip lapel brooches of pink gold are classic examples..
The Post War era (1950's) The US takes over from Europe for the first
time in leading fashion trends. A period of exploding wealth ushers in
an opulent look featuring fancy cut diamonds, free form designs, big bold
pieces with substantial carat weight of diamonds and colored stones. The
18K white gold bracelet with the floral design center and geometric link
bracelet is a fine example.
Modern Jewelry
Using
your drawings, supplied photos or a piece of costume jewelry we can create
an actual wax mold you may try on in order to visualize proportion. The
next step is to create the piece with your choice of metal and stones.
The finished product will be of superior quality at a substantial savings
over anything available at a retail outlet with the added benefit of custom
design. In many instances we can order direct from a manufacturer a piece
of jewelry you have in mind. We also have an extensive collection of catalogs
for ideas.
We are going to briefly describe the pieces in the top right hand picture
(metal usage, stone cutting and setting, etc.) , we have recently made
